Beginner's Luck

As I have mentioned before when filling in for Matt, I am not a huge collector these days.  Until last December when Matt suggested we break open a couple of hobby boxes for fun, I hadn't opened anything more than a couple of retail packs in years.  Our first in what would end up becoming a monthly box break was 2013 Topps Update.  I had no expectations going in so I was pretty excited about this pull...

It was definitely the big find of the night, and I broke the odds with my first box break in close to a decade.  The funny thing is, this card still remains my best pull in the 7 months that we have been opening.  At the time, I figured I would sell it and reinvest, but now I think it might just stay in the collection as a reminder of my beginner's luck.  Does anyone else out there have a cool beginner's luck story?

Happy Friday!  And thanks for checking out the blog today.

  1. I had a good "beginner's luck" story in February, when I pulled a Max Scherzer "sparkle" variation from my first blaster of the 2014 Topps Series 1 that I had bought (and my first blaster of any kind, honestly). Sold it immediately on eBay, though -- no sentimentality here!

  2. When I first started collecting hockey cards back in the early 90's, I lucked out and pulled a Team Pinnacle card of Mario Lemieux or maybe it was Patrick Roy. I had no idea what I had and ended up trading it to the dealer for more packs. A little bit later, I discovered how rare the card was and was totally bummed out.
