One of the More Famous Pirates

First, big thanks to everybody who traded with me the past couple of weeks.  That is what Bob Walk the Plank is all about.  It's always nice to see trade packages in my mailbox.  I'm finally caught up on my trade posts so I'll probably spend some time this weekend getting some more trades together.  As always shoot me an email if you have some Buccos to deal.  I have lots of relics/autos/inserts/base of every team.

I've been on a cold streak lately with eBay purchases, which is a shame because prices have been affordable for a lot of the Pirates.  Gerrit Cole autos seem to be the only thing I can win, with one big exception.  I've been on the hunt for this auto since Opening Day came out and finally got it done a few weeks back.  Check this out....
2014 Topps Opening Day Pirate Parrot Auto

The Parrot is one of the more recognizable mascots out there, so that along with the novelty of owning a weird item drove the prices sky high when Opening Day was released.  Thankfully the market cooled some and I was able to find one for a much more reasonable price.  Maybe we can have a good comment debate below on the top 5 baseball mascots.  In no order here are my favorites.

1. Pirate Parrot
2. Mr. Met
3. Phillie Phanatic
4. Bernie Brewer
5. The Oriole Bird
Honorable Mention Billy the Marlin

The Parrot auto also helped with a little side project I'm working on.  I've challenged myself to see how much of the master set of 2014 Opening Day I can complete.  I've already completed the set along with the non auto/relic insert sets.  I also have a good chunk of the blue parallels /2014.  The relics are cheap with the exception of Jeter which I should be able to find at some point.  I have a good start on the autos, but most likely will not complete.  Mike Trout is way too expensive.  So my goal is to find everything minus Trout and call it a day.  I'm thinking Opening Day will be my one non Pirate project every year.  The price point is great and a lot of the blog world opens it so trades should be easy to make.

Thanks for reading!

  1. you forgot the San Diego Chicken... probably the father of modern mascots... my favorite is the Phanatic being a Phillies Phan and all that but I love all of them really... second favorite is probably Riptide down here in Norfolk

    1. The Chicken is a classic, but my mindset was active mascots. I love some of the minor league mascots!

  2. I know I sound like a homer, but I prefer the early iterations of Bernie Brewer -- from back in the 1970s and 1980s when he slid into a mug of beer and balloons were released when he hit "the suds".

    1. Classic Bernie! I like looking at how each mascots looks have progressed over time. The parrot has gradually gained weight over the years.

    1. Thanks Brady! I completed the insert mascot set and have a couple of the other autos in the set. I hope to get everything in the next few months.

  4. Good luck with the Opening Day master. I am still working on the 2011 Opening Day master. I have everything including autos minus 44 blues. I should have already completed it, but I got a late start on the blues and some of them stopped showing up on eBay for decent prices anyway.

    1. I actually had no intentions going for the master, but the perfect storm of trades, good eBay lots and having a friend who opened just as much as me worked in my favor.
