Birthdays, Craft Beer and a Trade With Fuji

Today is my lovely wife's birthday.  Big shout out to her for letting me play with pieces of cardboard on a nightly basis.  I surprised her by booking a weekend trip to NYC in early October.  Maybe that earned me enough brownie points to buy a box of Triple Threads.....

This weekend is looking to be an exciting one at Bob Walk the Plank headquarters.  Morgantown is getting amped for a great Saturday showdown between #3 Oklahoma and the Mountaineers.  One of my oldest childhood friends is driving in from DC to spend the weekend with me which is always exciting.  What makes this extra awesome is that Nick has a hobby that benefits me and will make for an awesome tailgate.  Nick's hobby is beer.  Check out his collection that he has accumulated.

Delicious craft beer will make for a fun weekend.  That is a lot of unopened fancy beer!

To continue with the positive vibes heading into the weekend I had an envelope from Fuji waiting for me when I got home.  This package hits both old and new...

I've mentioned a thousand times before, but starting the blog has done wonders for my vintage Pirate card collection.  Fuji hit some of my favorites with the group. John Candelaria is a personal favorite and any time I can add a card is a good day. Also, the Manny Sanguillen is a great looking card. I see Manny just about every time I head up to PNC park as Manny's BBQ is right beyond the outfield wall.  If you ever watch a Pirates game and see smoke just beyond the wall it is the grills being fired up.  Manny usually sits right next to the cashier and will sign just about anything you give him free as charge.  He is always super nice.

Chad Hermansen was one of the bigger busts in Pirate history.  As a minor leaguer he was famously dubbed to be able to "walk on water."  His major league career was a disaster from the start and his career flamed out rather quickly.  With that being said I love both of these autos.  Cards like these always are fun conversation starters with my fellow Pirate card collecting buddies.

.
Joe Randa had a long career in which he had a couple stints with the Pirates.

Tony Womack was one of my favorites while he was on the team.  Just wished the Pirates kept him as they would struggle for years to find a productive leadoff hitter to replace Womack.  This is a beautiful auto.

Thanks for all the great cards Fuji.  I'm sure I'll find some more stuff that will fit your collections soon.

Thanks for reading!

  2. If I'm ever lucky enough to attend a Pirates game at PNC, Manny's BBQ will be my first stop.

    1. They have a nice setup in the outfield. I don't eat in the stadium very often, but when I do it is my first choice.

Glad the Pirates brought the bats for that series. I was worried that the Sox were going to carry some momentum from the Royals series.

  4. I'm pulling for the Mountaineers this weekend! Woo-hoo! I still can't see them in the Big 12, but then again all the teams switching conferences is bit much for me sometimes. I wish they were all grouped by region.

Nice cards, I like the Randa ones. He was someone I really liked growing up.

    1. I was hoping for the ACC so we could get most of our traditional rivals back. We have lots of big games in the Big 12, but it is hard to get pumped when you have no history with any of your opponents. I know the University has been working on filling the non conference schedule with these teams. We already play Maryland, Virginia Tech starts up again soon, and I've heard talks of the Pitt series starting again.

Joe Joker Randa! He had a couple decent years for the Royals in the early 2000's.

  5. Terrapin Beer is from Athens. I'm not a fan of that beer, though, because, like many small breweries, they tend to cover up mistakes in beer flavor by pouring in so many hops that you feel like you are chewing the beer.

Especially if you have their "hopsecutioner."

Good luck to WVU this weekend. Will Dana Holgorsen ever put together a team with any defense whatsoever?

    1. I'll take a picture of the beers we try this weekend. I know you like the craft beers too.

As part of the Big 12 I think you are contractually obligated to have a shit defense. At least this year we are causing some turnovers. In today's college football that is about all you can ask for. Teams are going to score if they run the spread offense.

      Hopsecutioner is a great name.
