Adventures in ebay Packaging

Right before I left town last week I was opening some cards I had got in the mail to sort and scan. One of these cards was my newest addition to the Andrew McCutchen collection. I purposely left out discussing the packaging of this card because I thought it was good enough to warrant its own post. Check this out....

So the actual card was sandwiched between a thick piece of cardboard and an empty top loader. The card itself was also in a top loader. Oh the tape......so much freaking tape.

I mean seriously....I think the seller wrapped tape around about two thousand times.
Poor Cutch is suffocating from all the tape......

This is a great case of over protection. I left the seller positive feedback because the card arrived in great shape, but his methods seem to be without much thought. For one that looked to be a rather cumbersome process to ship one card. Also, the biggest risk to the card was unpacking. That should never be the case.

I probably should tell the guy a simple top loader and team bag would suffice. If he wants to go the extra mile some blue painters tape would be great for the extra security. This card could have probably survived a bucket of water, but it was 50/50 that the scissors or razor blade could have clipped the card. Tape residue could have been an issue as well.

When its all said in done I would much rather have a card packed like this than some crappy scotch tape on top of the case and a top loader that is too big. It just made me laugh when I took it out of the bubble mailer.

Thanks for reading!

Personally I think it's the opposite and they're just overthinking it. For all we know that's probably their failsafe plan to ensure that buyers can't bitch about improper shipping. Opening that taped behemoth might've been a pain but you can't argue that it wasn't secured ;).

    1. It may have been the most secure card ever. You are probably right though, that guy was probably aiming to please and did too much.

  2. Did it come wrapped in bubble wrap? I think it should have.

    1. That would have been a nice addition. Maybe throw in some packing peanuts in the bubble envelope too.

That's the problem with overkill. How the hell do you free the card safely from the prison the shipper created?

    1. That was the most frustrating part. His methods were screwy.

  5. I have noticed that whenever I reach out about shipping methods - whether good or bad - it does not usually go well.

    1. I've only done it once and it was because the actual card was damaged. I'm fine with this one, it just made me laugh.

  6. Reminds me of the weird packaging I had gotten with a Yogi Berra card. It was weird but still came out safe.

    1. I remember reading that post. Very similar in styles. Some people just think more tape means extra secure.

  7. Perfect example of over-protection. I could totally picture myself slicing the card in the process of cutting that tape. Glad everything turned out okay.

    1. I wasn't that upset with the seller, it was more just questioning his thought process. The guy shipped lightning fast and had free shipping so he is ok in my book.

    2. I wouldn't be upset either. Could've been a lot worse... he/she could have sent it in a PWE with just a penny sleeve.
