I actually like organizing my collection. Any time spent with cards is a good day, but for some reason I end up talking myself out of the task. Some of this stems from wanting to post something on the blog and reading all the other great blogs. Another key component is the length of time to complete the task. Knowing that this is more than a one day project I will likely leave cards and supplies out on my desk to continue at the next free moment. This is a recipe for destruction when you have a two year old. While she has been trained that cards are to be treated like fine art, the will power of a two year old will always lead to mayhem and destruction.
To get around my mental blocks I've decided to take a manageable stack of cards from the unsorted boxes a few times a week. This will allow me to complete each stack and put everything away every night. In my head this sounds good, but we'll see what happens.
Now for more vintage!!!!!
1935 Diamond Stars Lloyd Waner
Always something exciting about adding a nice vintage card. Lloyd "Little Poison" Waner (great nickname) is one of those guys you might not realize is in the Hall of Fame. His brother Paul aka "Big Poison" (even better nickname) was much more celebrated and had over 3000 hits in his career. Lloyd was voted in by the veterans committee in 1967 while Paul was voted in 1952.
In terms of cardboard both seem to be a little under valued. This Little Poison ran me about $16. A small price to pay for 80 year old cardboard featuring a hall member. Since prices are low I may try find some cards featuring Lloyd and Paul.
Thanks for reading!
That card is awesome. And it sounds like you got an incredible deal on it too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jon! I was a little late to the vintage game so I still get excited when I can add such an old card.
Deleteyou just need to tackle the problem, and you'll see, it'll be done in no time. Well, unless, of course, you keep adding cards to those unsorted boxes...(I know that's my problem).
ReplyDeleteAnd that's a great looking vintage card. Too bad they left out the nickname !
If it said "Little Poison" this card would be one of my favorites. As you know I'm sucker for nickname cards.
DeleteAdding cards is a huge problem. For the longest time I was doing a good job keeping up, but as soon as my daughter got big enough to reach the table I had to put stuff in boxes unsorted.
Nice Waner.
ReplyDeleteShoot. Zippy beat me to it.
DeleteYou have Waner envy
DeleteI started my big sorting project in December of 2014. After a couple of weeks school started back up and I put it all back on the shelf. I've accumulated plenty of cardboard since then, but I sure haven't sorted any of it. It's hard to get started.
ReplyDeleteI probably just need to take a month off from buying new cards. That should give me enough time to tackle the problem.
DeleteThat would probably work but c'mon you know you can't do it! My son recently grabbed a Trufant rookie and took a bite out of it.. sorting gone wrong I guess it fell on the floor
DeleteIt is hard not to buy cards for a month. In years past I would take off a good part of either November or December in preparation for the holidays. This year I purchased items, but most were bought as trade bait.
DeleteTrufant sounds like food.....
I'm with you. I'm in dire need of organization.
ReplyDeleteMoving doesn't help. If I moved while my blog was active it would have been a mess.
DeleteMan, I hear you on the sorting end. My desk has gotten worse lol
ReplyDeleteIt is tough if you trade a lot and open boxes.
Deleteyou forgot to mention "former dodger, lloyd waner...". i've been doing some organizing over the past month - i think my dodger binders are updated through 1994 now, with doubles consolidated through then as well. only 21 years left to go through...
ReplyDeleteIf you had a short vacation around the time Waner was on the Dodgers you would have missed it. I didn't even know he played for them.
DeleteI'm impressed with anybody that can be that organized. It is a tough project. Wish I could go back and tell my young self to get on the project.
great get!
ReplyDeleteThank you sir!
DeleteI've been spending so much time organizing over the past several months -- and enjoying it -- that my blogging really fell off. So, I know what you mean. When you only get an hour or two each day to relax with cards, you have to pick and choose.
ReplyDeleteAs it is, I'm with GCRL on the organizing stage. I'm working through my doubles to make sure that they are doubles (and, after finding several that weren't, it's made it worth while!) and to get them cataloged on Zistle. In between, I'm working on that massive Christmas gift I got. Tons of boxes and binders everywhere!
You are right about it being a delicate balance. I like the pace of posting I have with the blog. I guess the only way around it would be to have a weeks worth of posts done in one day. That way each day I get home I can focus on the sorting.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the massive Christmas gift is both daunting and fun.
Beautiful card Matt. Those colors really pop for being more than 80 years old!
ReplyDeleteIt is very Art Deco!
DeleteThat is a steal of a deal - I had my eye on a couple older Pirates to send your way, you got a great deal on little poison!
ReplyDeleteYeah....I've been kind of getting the vintage bug lately. New Pirate cards have been pretty limited lately so the opportunity was there.
DeleteThat card is gorgeous. Love the bright colors on it. As for sorting... I'm in the exact same boat. I enjoy it... but for some reason when I actually have some free time... 9 out of 10 times... I make an excuse not to do it.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I need my Mom's voice in my head when I start to put off the sorting. "Now Matt you can't watch the football game until you sort your cards for one hour."
DeleteGood luck with the sorting. I have forced myself into putting cards away every time I pick some up (either thru trade or purchase) and even that can be a bit daunting.
ReplyDeleteUltimately that is what I would like to do. I think if I got things caught up that would be feasible.
DeleteGreat card
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark! This post was right up your alley.
DeleteVintage = art. Waner is gorgeous, colorful and yours. dang it - yours!
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the more unique cards I have in my collection
