Fancy Pants

Now that Cutch is a Giant the Pirates are void of any high $ players in terms of cardboard. The only exception would be collecting Chrome parallels of high end prospects, but I don't play that game. Paying $500 for a guy in AA is pretty crazy and crosses the threshold from collector to investor. To each his own, I just don't have that kind of disposable income.

Lately I've been having fun picking up Pirates from high end sets.  Tyler Glasnow is the perfect example of Topps over saturating the market. At one point Glasnow was a top prospect which means you get a ton of cards. He was in every set. After a disastrous start to his MLB career his card prices bottomed out. I jumped on the opportunity.

2017 Topps Five Star Tyler Glasnow Patch/Auto /35

While I'm upset that Tyler has had a rough go of it, his struggle has opened the door for high end card purchases.  Who knows, maybe he'll right the ship and this will turn out to be the steal of the century.  While that would be a bonus, I'm happy to own a nice looking card at a bargain price either way.  The final price was $11.50 on eBay.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I picked up a few autos and patches of him recently too. I think he's going to be a dominant relief pitcher for us for a few years.

    1. I'll feel good if he can have a handful of good outings. His first was promising. Even with a couple of walks he was around the zone.

  2. Nice pickup! Reminds me of Archie Bradley autos and relics in 2015

    1. Oh man, Bradley cards have been a roller coaster for sure.

  3. Whether he pans out or not, a three color patch of that size with an auto for $11.50 is pretty good value. Personally, I don't think we've seen the best of Glasnow yet.

    1. The Pirates really need him. He probably has the best stuff on the team, but his command is just total shit. It is just so hard being that tall and have a consistent release point. His first appearance was promising so hopefully some consistency is coming down the pipeline.

    Thanks for that...

  5. I wish I could think about dropping $500 on any card... let alone a AA guy who may or may not have an MLB career.

    P.S. Cool card.

    1. Yeah that would be a tough gamble. It really is amazing how expensive those go for. Have you ever looked at basketball rookies....good god they are expensive.

    2. Totally. I jumped back into the hobby when Durant was a rookie and collected basketball until Curry was a rookie. Stuff is like cardboard gold. I'll be posting some of the hidden treasures I've found the past two times I've gone down to Vegas to visit my parents. Some of the current prices are straight up crazy.

    3. I saw some Greek Freak cards go for thousands the other day. I expect guys like Lebron and now Steph to sell that high but was surprised to see that one.

    1. Usually the best sign of when a player hits rock bottom is sellers having to make auto lots because the singles won't sell on their own. If Glasnow struggles again this year I have a feeling that might happen.
