Don't Follow my Example

A Certain amount of care and responsibility has a way to trickle down even to fun hobbies like card collecting.  I've been mentioning in my posts a lot lately that I've started a major reorganization.  I use the word reorganization loosely as I barely had an organization system to begin with. While I wish I had taken the bull by the horns early on, it really does no good to dwell.  It's actually been fun going through some old boxes, many of which have unearthed some hidden treasures.

My first project has been my WVU collection.  I'm going to binder route here as it is still at a somewhat manageable size.  I've been collecting a few players long enough that they can have their own individual binder (Geno Smith, Tavon Austin, Pat White, Steve Slaton) while the others can be organized alphabetically.  Having the cards organized is this way will then allow me to tackle some type of online database if I choose later on.  It has been extremely satisfying to see the plan coming together.

Here is a look at the work in progress.....

The elephant in the room is the Pirates collection.  While I look forward to tackling that project in the near future I really have no plan of attack yet.  The player pool is so small for the WVU collection it allows for some intricate detail.  As I sort through WVU stuff I've at least been putting certain types of Pirates cards together (relics, rookies, autos etc).  Not sure if this will help but it will at least be a start.

Like most projects the hard part is getting started.  Now I enjoy the time I can spend on the project.  I went in with the idea that I would spend 30 minutes a day.  Obviously travel and work schedule can screw with that, but averaged out that is probably close to what I'm doing.

Thanks for reading.  Some of you have already shared with me your organization style, but if you haven't I would love to hear.  I'm especially interested in those that have major team collections that encompass lots of base, autos and relics.

  1. you have your work cut out but at least it's a fun job! I use shoe boxes to keep my team sets together, sorted by year>brand>number. Main player collections are sorted this way as well. Cards valued at $100+ are in the safe. Hand-collated sets, mini-collections and small player collections (less than 50 cards) are in binders. I do pull my cards out of the safe often. They need love too. (Sets by Gio-WTHBalls are also locked up.)

  2. Nice, good luck getting organized! I'd love to have a good look at your collections especially if you can get them in an album or something.

  3. I have my Braves in binders. Lots of binders. Topps base cards take up several (like 5) large binders, then the other Topps brands each have their own binders. Upper Deck, Fleer, Donruss base same thing, and then I have inserts binders, auto binders, relic binders. (of course everything from the last 1.5 yrs are sitting on my dresser or in boxes in front of it back home. Except for the inserts, autos, and relics they are oldest first in the binders then so on. The inserts and relics/autos just go into the next slot available waiting one day to be organized by year. That's just Braves. One day I plan on bindering (new word) up my set builds. All of my other mini collections are in binders too again except for the last 1.5 yrs. Those are sitting on top of and in front of my bedroom bookshelves which house the Braves and PC binders. It never ends, what's great is no matter how big the task is......we'll always have something to do, lol.

  4. I'm looking at restarting my sorting again next month..
Basically looking at printing off the checklists from TCDB and manually checking that way for sets...
    For teams, I'm not sure..
I think the Expos project will be in a spreadsheet

  5. I recently made a nice dent in my collection organization recently, it feels good to see the cards in 5000-ct boxes. Good luck with the Pirates collection, that is going to be a beast to reorganize.

  6. You're making better sorting progress than I am! Card sorting trays come in such handy!

  7. I have binders for my Topps 1969 thru 1981 basketball sets and my Fleer 1986 thru 1990 sets. A couple basketball player collections binders that need to me expanded to more binders, honestly. Then my A's binder, goalie binder, and random football binders. Autos and specialty cards in old cigar boxes. And then a bookshelf and closet full of some sorted and some unsorted madness, ranging from 500 count to 5000 count monsters of mostly basketball. Some of the mid to late 90's basketball boxes are truly daunting. I've got to find new homes for some of it.
