This May be the Ugliest Card I Own

2012 SP Signature Edition Bay/Francouer/Mauer/Willis Auto /20

I found this card on eBay not long after it listed and put it on my watch list. I pretty much hate everything about this card and yet here we are. Please make fun of me in the comments as I deserve every insult for owning this card. The allure of adding a new Jason Bay to my collection was just too much for me to handle.

While I'm not a super collector, Bay holds a special place in my collecting heart. I just enjoy adding cards of his no matter how crappy the design.  You put Polanco or Cutch on this card and I easily pass on it.

Good lord this card is ugly......but it is mine.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Ugly, I guess, but it's a fun group of players. Looks like Mauer (49.8 and counting) wins the bWAR...uh...war, followed by Bay (24.3), Willis (15.4), and Francoeur (6.1), which is pretty much what you'd expect.

I know what it's like to have to add a card like this to a supercollection--hell, almost everything at this point is Topps and it's so U-G-L-Y it ain't got no alibi, but at least this is a signature card, and a four-player version at that!

    1. The weird thing is I have a couple Mauer autos in my collection. He was also featured with Freddy Sanchez.

  2. Ugly is correct. Nice auto card with 4 sigs helps?? Probably would have been a great blog bat around. Ugliest card in your collection. Would have been more fitting if you posted this card two days ago on 4/20.

  3. Yup. That's an ugly card. The Mauer auto makes it worthwhile tho

    1. Man, Mauer looked like one of those guys that was destined for the Hall of Fame. He and Morneau just couldn't stay on the field. Now Mauer's numbers don't look that great as a first basemean.

  4. Is that a serial number, or are they admitting they were high when they designed it?

But I'd buy that kind of card if it were a player I collect, and the price was right...

    1. The prices is pretty much always right with this set. It has been universally panned as a sticker dumpster fire. While the 4 of 20 is the serial number, it would have made much more sense if they were high.

  5. Am I seeing notebook paper-like lines behind the signatures? Wow. Just wow.

  6. Jason Bay has the most legible signature of the bunch, so that's a win for you!

It is weird that they didn't bother to include little headshots of each playing instead of the silhouette, They had an MLBPA license at the time, didn't they?

    1. I think they had lost their license by this time.

  7. While the card is butt, I'm always happy to be reminded of Dontrelle Willis. Always loved watching that guy pitch.

    1. Yeah, you just never know when a pitcher is going to lose their mojo. Look at Lincecum too!

    1. Cut autos of living players are always a little cringe worthy.

  9. I hate mine equally as much as you, but I had to buy them! I have all the Garvey autos from that same set, including the one numbered to 2 with Koufax!

  10. Man, 2017 Joe Mauer is so so bad. But that card is so so cool, in spite of it's lack of design. And nothing against Willis, but I'm bothered they didn't pick another player whose name started with J like Jimmy Rollins or Jim Edmonds or Jeff Bagwell.

    1. Ha....Well I guess they ran out of options from the class of 2002. Man, peak Mauer was impossible to get out.

    1. All guys ended up having multiple seasons as major leaguers....Plus it is a unique combo of players.

  13. Maybe not as ugly as just not much going on there but the signatures. I'd say that's enough to make the grade tho.
