A Wild and Crazy Middle Reliever Card

2013 Panini America's Pastime Justin Wilson Book Auto /49

I've lost out on a couple of these cards over the years.  It was probably for the better as now the shipping cost just as much as the card. I'm glad that it is finally mine because I love cards like this of obscure Pirates.

For those who don't remember the  America's Pastime set it was based around receiving a book autos in every box. The weird thing about the set though was the dual book autos had some really weird combinations. Needless to say the set failed. A couple of years back Dave and Adams ran a super sell on these at over 50% off the original price tag. You could pick up singles for cheap on eBay.

As for the player....

Justin Wilson was never a high end prospect, but he was left handed and could throw really hard. He was a two pitch pitcher so he was destined for the bullpen even though he spent most of his time in the minors starting.  He turned himself into a productive bullpen guy and has logged quite a bit of innings between stops in Pittsburgh, New York and the Tigers.

Thanks for reading.

    1. Definitely not the guy you want to pull out of a box of this stuff, but I'm happy to have it.

  2. Pretty neat to have a booklet of any kind. I should look for some cheap Yanks from this set.

    1. I'm sure they are there. It is probably some weird dual booklet of Scott Brosius and Xavier Nady.

  3. The box didn't have a booklet AUTO in each one, just a booklet. In the box I ripped, I recvd a booklet with dual swatches of Schilling and Johnson, but non autographed.

    1. Thanks for the clarification....I thought it was an auto. You actually probably did better by getting the Schilling and Johnson then some of the crap autos.

  4. That is definitely a gorgeous card. Heck, I'm happy when a middle reliever gets a card at all, let alone such a nice booklet auto.

    1. He was kind of a weird person to put in the set. He wasn't a hyped rookie and he pretty much started out in the bullpen. Either way it was cool to have such a unique card of such an obscure player.

  5. i love pickup up cards like these cheaply! This particular set had a diverse group of autos and relics. I've probably picked up at least half of the base cards too in an auction win a couple years ago...at LOW cost. obviously I need to pay more attention to D&A Card World! good for you Matt! It's nice-looking card!
