Buried Treasure

When it comes to collecting cards I try to keep myself as educated as much as possible, but for some reason my brain refuses to grasp one major aspect of collecting modern cards.  For the life of me I can never remember photo variations.  Case in point 2014 Topps Opening Day.

Sunday night I was sorting some cards and came to a huge stack of 2014 OD.  At the time I was searching for Yankees.  As I was pulling out a few Mariano Rivera cards I came across these....

Within 10 cards of each other was the regular issue Rivera and the photo variation.  As most of you the variations are very tough pulls, so needless to say I was happy to find such a good one.  I'm not one to sell my cards so if any of my Yankee's friends are interested just let me know and maybe we can work out a trade.

Whats makes this whole scenario so funny is that I've studied the list of variations on cardboardconnection.com on numerous occasions (Jose Fernandez is my favorite if you click on the link).  My guess is that I pulled this from a Target Blaster looking for specific cards to complete my set and just pushed this one aside. For those that I've sent Opening Day cards take a second look as I might have passed along a hidden gem.  Mistakes like this is what makes searching dime boxes so much fun since as OD base cards often end up there.   Stay vigilant dime box hunters!

Anybody have a similar story?

Thanks for reading!

  1. I spent 15 minutes this weekend cross referencing CC's list of 2014 Chrome photo variations with the cards I pulled out of my box break. Unfortunately I didn't find any :(

I am a fan of them though. It adds a little challenge to those who are building a master set... while giving a little variety to player/team collectors.

    1. I like the photo variations, especially when they are quirky. Just need to train my eyes a little better and slow down when I'm opening packs.

  2. These are basically the jackpot when it comes to dime boxes. Congrats on finding such a sweet card!

I dug out 2012 Topps SPs of Ichiro and Justin Verlander in a dime box earlier this year, and nabbed a 2014 Topps Yadier Molina SP from the local flea market for a dime last week.

Like Mr. Fuji, I love these kinds of short-prints. They're a million times better than the stupid "sparkle" SPs Topps keeps putting out.

    1. I agree that the photo variations are awesome. I'm sure these are really exciting to find in dime boxes.

  3. I'd be more of a fan of these short-prints if there weren't about 80 different parallel variations already to collect for my player collections.

I will say that I prefer the photo variations over the 2014 "Sparkle" gimmick.

    1. I'm just conditioned when I open packs to pull all the Pirates and hits. Just need to teach myself patience and to study each card.

  4. I always go back and look for SPs after the fact. At least these are easier to spot than those damn diamond sparkles from a few years ago. I killed my eyes looking for those things.

    1. One of the main problems is that I opened a ton of Opening Day. The last few blasters I purchased I was looking for particular cards so I was too focused on what I needed.

The diamond cards were a pain in the ass. I probably have 5 of those in a box somewhere.
