I'm not one to chase the Topps parallels. In my mind I keep thinking it would be cool to try and complete a rainbow, but to date I've been able to talk myself out of it. I'll leave that to crazy people like Zippy.
With that being said a couple of the parallels have caught my attention in Topps. I'm really digging the /10 acetate cards and /20 silver frame cards. I made one big acetate purchase last month by picking up the Gregory Polanco. Since I spent a good bit of money on that card I figured I would go for a more complimentary player rather than a star with the silver frame
2015 Topps Silver Frame Parallel Jordy Mercer /20
First off these cards are thick and more solid than I expected. When Chris pulled the Hamels in the group break it didn't look that thick to me. Either way I was intrigued and wanted to get one for my collection. This Mercer was a nice compromise at less than $10 shipped. Overall I still like the acetate cards a little better, but these are a nice change of pace. For better or worse at least these have a unique characteristic.
If I were to chase another silver or acetate card I would probably go for that Pirates team card.
Thanks for reading.
I love the team cards. Some don't, because they see it as 30 spots in the set that could be given to actual players, but I like the more candid shots. The Pirates card definitely is one of my favorites in this year's set.
ReplyDeleteTopps has hit pretty much all the regulars for the Pirates so I was happy to see the team card. For some reason they left out a regular McCutchen card, but other than that everyone is covered.
DeleteVery nice. Had this been the Pirates of the mid-00's, a lot of the parallel chases might've been a lot more obtainable and realistic (except for Jason Bay & Freddy Sanchez I guess).
ReplyDeleteBay would have been the only one to carry a decent price, but compared to the guys now he would have been still quite affordable. I'm sure I'll end up doing it at some point. Probably end up picking a guy that I'll see play here in Morgantown this year.
DeleteAgree on the coolness of the Pirates team card. No Giants team card in Series 1, hoping they get one as cool in Series 2. I need to search for one of those framed parallels and acetate cards for my collection. Like you, I think a sample of one each would be cool. Nice pickups.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few of the silver framed cards go for below $10. The acetate cards must be really popular as even the lower end players carry a premium price.
DeleteI bet the Giants team card will be in Series 2.
I actually like the team cards also. I always wished one of the Yankees was someone getting a pie in the face from AJ Burnett, but Topps turned those into parallels.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the Pirates will get a Burnett pie card next year since he is back with the team!
DeleteI'd love to see an AJ pie card
DeleteThat would be cool. Have you picked up any of the Morton parallels?
DeleteSorry being about a week late responding. I've got the rainbow and base from a break, was given the gold from a friend, and snagged black pink snow frame and blank back off eBay.
DeleteNice. I thought a saw one silver parallel hit eBay a few weeks back. I don't actively search Morton, so I'm sure more have popped up.
DeleteI think I'm going to try to complete a Kennys Vargas rainbow for 2015 Series 1 - I saw that he has a hilarious (to me) photo variation, too.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a nice year for Topps! The Silver frame looks awesome, hope to find an example of one this weekend, just to get an idea for the weight of it.
Vargas would be a cool choice. Those are the best type of players to choose.
DeleteLet me know if you find any cool Pirate parallels!
I finally picked up a silver-framed card about a week ago. I still haven't managed to snag one of the acetate parallels. The framed cards are rather sturdy.
ReplyDeleteThe acetates are hard to find a good deal. Even the lower players still go for $20 plus.
