Counting Backwards 313 to 312

I have to admit I'm a little more excited than normal about a recent purchase I made. Thanks to Greg from Plaschke Thy Sweater is Argyle with the assist on this one.  First a little build up....

Vintage cards are not in my comfort zone.  Before starting my blog I had very little in the way of vintage Buccos.  Now that I've been around for a little while and have some great trade partners, my collection has turned pretty respectable.  The gradual additions via trade has led me to more and more purchases. Back in early 2016 I made one of my favorite purchases.

This is the 1936 National Chicle fine pen premiums R313 featuring the Waner brothers catching a piggy back ride from Big Jim Weaver.  It is just so cool and unique. I feel in love with it the first time I saw it.  It took a little time for me to find one in decent condition, but eventually I snagged one.

Fast forward to a couple weeks back and Greg sends me a Tweet with an eBay link.  When I first saw the link, I thought it was for the same card I already owned since I only took a glance at the description.

It turns out the link was for the pastel version of the card! I'm super pumped that I have both versions and that they are in relatively good condition.

Fine Pen Premiums and a Beer Whale

I was in Washington DC all weekend hanging out with friends. Lots of good stories were told, and beer consumed. The group I was with are full fledged beer geeks so we visited a lot of breweries and drank some fancy beer.

My favorite of all the breweries was called Ocelot. It was a cool setup and the prices were very affordable. Without knowing it turns out that two of the brewers are WVU grads and they even name some of their beer after places in Morgantown.

The only negative is that was located way out towards Dulles airport so it was an expensive Uber ride.

 Here is one of their flights. They really cater to the IPA and Sour beers.

For all the beer nerds out there this is for you. This is one hard as hell beer to find and considered by many as one of the best ipa's in the world. The brewery is Russian River which is in California.  One of the guys I was with this weekend is a military guy so he has an extensive network of friends from all over the US. He was given two bottles, one of which he shared with us.

It was a fun weekend, but I feel my body needs a nice week long cleanse.

1936 National Chicle Fine Pen Premium Paul Waner/Lloyd Waner/Big Jim Weaver

I've been on a nice run adding the Waner brothers to the collection. This set is pretty unique as the first half featured normal baseball poses while the second half of the set featured pictures like this card. When I saw the card on eBay I fell in love with it. 

The card is in perfect condition so I wasn't too upset with the price of $34 shipped. Probably the biggest issue will be storage as these are tall cards. I like it so much I may just put it on a shelf for display.

Pending Organization and a Little Poison

I'm in dire need of getting my cardboard organized. While this part of collecting has never been a strong point, the boxes of unsorted cards have gotten out of control.  The silly thing is I have all the supplies needed, but having supplies and actually using them are two completely different things.

I actually like organizing my collection. Any time spent with cards is a good day, but for some reason I end up talking myself out of the task. Some of this stems from wanting to post something on the blog and reading all the other great blogs. Another key component is the length of time to complete the task. Knowing that this is more than a one day project I will likely leave cards and supplies out on my desk to continue at the next free moment.  This is a recipe for destruction when you have a two year old. While she has been trained that cards are to be treated like fine art, the will power of a two year old will always lead to mayhem and destruction.

To get around my mental blocks I've decided to take a manageable stack of cards from the unsorted boxes a few times a week. This will allow me to complete each stack and put everything away every night. In my head this sounds good, but we'll see what happens.

1935 Diamond Stars Lloyd Waner

Always something exciting about adding a nice vintage card.  Lloyd "Little Poison" Waner (great nickname) is one of those guys you might not realize is in the Hall of Fame. His brother Paul aka "Big Poison" (even better nickname) was much more celebrated and had over 3000 hits in his career. Lloyd was voted in by the veterans committee in 1967 while Paul was voted in 1952.

In terms of cardboard both seem to be a little under valued. This Little Poison ran me about $16. A small price to pay for 80 year old cardboard featuring a hall member. Since prices are low I may try find some cards featuring Lloyd and Paul.
