Penny Sleeves Make for a Good PWE

I'm getting excited for the rare match up between the only Division 1 schools in WV. Marshall and WVU use to play on a regular basis but the commitment ended in 2015.  Nice to see a game with so much on the line.  WVU has a dominant advantage in the all time series, but the games have always been close.  

On to a mail day with a nice basketball theme.  

Jon from A Penny Sleeve for your thoughts recently hit with a PWE that hit some of my non Pirates collections. 

 I've been making some process in accumulating some recent West cards.  I went for a stretch right before I started blogging where I was adding on a regular basis and then I hit a dry spell.  Now thanks to Jon and many other bloggers I'm starting to heat up again.

WVU hasn't had much success in putting players in the NBA lately so West often times is the lone guy to look for.

 I've long been a sucker for canvas cards so Turkey Red was always a favorite for baseball.  Nice to see the basketball variety.

Now for a couple of legendary Steelers.

 If you weren't a fan of the Steelers during Bettis's peak you probably hated watching them.  He was the ultimate football closer because his style would just milk a clock.

I didn't remember the "Sensations" Fleer Ultra set.  Classy looking with the fancy borders.

 The Steelers don't screw up much when determining what players to sign and which ones to let go via free agency.  Woodson was one of the rare misses.  He would go on and play a ton more productive years after he left Pittsburgh.

Ending with fire here.  Yeah, it is a Braves card, but Walk transcends normal team alliances. I often joke that any Braves issued Walk card is good for a free admission in any Atlanta area strip club. Actually that is not a joke.  It works, trust me....!

I Got a Participation Trophy

Jon from A Penny Sleeve For Your Thoughts recently held a contest celebrating post #168!  He was so excited about his upcoming 200th post that he rounded up.  The contest had a great turnout and after the randomizer I finished dead last.  Jon likes the lovable loser so he sent me a consolation prize.

I was pumped not only to receive cards from Jon, but this also broke the trading ice between us. I always enjoy his posts and look forward to this starting a long fruitful trading relationship as well. Love getting cards from new people!

Now for my participation award.

 Black Diamond seemed so classy when it came out.  I remember people going crazy for players like JD Drew.  I remember paying for a small retail box of these at a Kmart and thought it was the coolest thing ever.  This Jose Guillen is numbered to /3000

 The Pirates cut ties with Tony Womack way too early.  It would take years for them to find another decent leadoff hitter.

The gold parallel is numbered /1500

 I enjoy the Prizm sets.  Makes you long for a Panini baseball license.  This is a very patriotic parallel.

 John Reger looks like he is 60 years old.  Probably a steady diet of scotch and red meat.

 You don't hear wide receivers called flankers much anymore.  It was cool of Jon to throw me some vintage football.  Probably the least represented type of card in my collection.

 Guys like Al Martin are always fun for me to collect because they played in the mid to late 90's. I find this one of the more fun eras to collect because of the perfect combination of variety and weirdness.

Jose Guillen is another one in that beloved era. This cards checks a lot of boxes for me.  I have such a soft spot for any Pacific brand. Extra bonus for it being a mini.
