The End so I Can Begin Again

2015 Gypsy Queen Starling Marte Photo Variation SP

This was the last card on my white whale list! I referenced it the other day when I was creating my new list.  The new list can found on this post and on the right side of my homepage.  It was fun to complete and I really appreciate those who helped with the cause.  They are immortalized on my "found white whales" page.

I'm not a huge fan of photo variations.  Don't get me wrong I appreciate a nice photo, but I find them way overpriced. This card cost me more than what a Marte auto would cost (~$20). So chasing this card was never on the agenda, but I think I just got sucked in by the photo.

Most of the fun celebration cards for Pirates feature Cutch or Josh Harrison. When I saw the Marte card I knew I had to have it.  I was a little surprised how long this one took as they were all over eBay for the longest time, but going for crazy high prices. Thankfully it was found on COMC and I could reset my list.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Nice post and good luck on the new list.

I completely agree with short prints. I wish they weren't as rare... like maybe $5 at the very most.

    1. I don't mind photo variations, the price points are just hard to stomach. I loath regular base set Sp's just for the sake of short printing them. I'm a fan of a base set, maybe 1 or 2 parallels. If a few photo variations exist I can live with that.

  2. One of my goals is to come upon a white whale item for you. At least I'm somewhat young, yet!

    1. Well this list is fairly attainable. I just base it on auctions lost.

  3. Short printed photo variations are the bane of my existence. I only pursue them on rare occasions (like the David Ortiz flag/speech card) I dont blame you for for getting sucked in, though. It's a nice card.

I dont have any of your new white whales, but I have a Kevin Young Gold Refractor from 1999 Finest (#d/100) let me know if you need it, it's the only rare/low #d Buc in my box.

    Congrats on capturing your whale!

    1. You and I definitely need to trade soon. I'll check your want lists and see what I can do. Please hold the Kevin Young. That card is right in my sweet spot of cards I love the most.

    2. I'm putting your name on it now. Well, not right on the card, obviously :D

  4. Harpooned - congrats on a nice card. the photo is a great one. I've pretty much given up on photo variations. I pick up Ty Cobb and Altuve and depend on trades for the others - for which I am always most grateful!

    1. I love a lot of the photos used, but the scarcity factor makes them so cost prohibitive.
