2011 Gypsy Queen Venezuelan Stamp Jose Tabata /10
I usually stay away from the odd cards from Gypsy Queen such as these and the coin cards, but sometimes the price is just too good. I'm also continuing my impromptu Yankee tie in as Tabata was drafted by the Yankees and then traded as part of the Xavier Nady deal. I showed off a Cole card yesterday as he was originally drafted by the Yankees. Tabata had a great opportunity to secure a long term spot in the Pirates outfield, but struggled staying healthy and contributing on an everyday basis. It looks like as long as he is a Pirate he will be a 4th outfielder. Tabata is still very young so he may be an attractive buy low trade target.
At the very least this card is a neat conversation piece. One of my good friends is from Venezuela so he often asks me how Tabata is doing. I've given him autos of Venezuelan born players as gifts before so I may just give him this card as he would probably appreciate it more. Anybody ever pull any of the stamp or coin cards before? If you recall I pulled the Allen Craig coin out of 2013 Gypsy Queen. I don't really like selling cards so I probably just hold onto to that one until one of my Cardinal blogging friends pulls a good Pirate card.
Thanks for checking out the blog!
Very cool card. I've never pulled any of the coin or stamp cards myself, but I like them. I really like it when companies think outside of the box. I own a few different stamp cards and at least one coin card.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the flag cards from this years Gypsy Queen? I like the stamp cards, not sure if I like the coin cards. I'm sure over time it will grow on me.
DeleteI've never seen these... but I just looked them up and found a sweet Darvish card. These are way out of my price range though.
DeleteThat is why I stick to guys like Tabata for these type of cards. When I'm looking to spend money on McCutchen or Cole I would much rather have an auto or patch.
DeleteCool card-but I guess I am confused I thought the stamp would be of the year he was born, clearly this one isn't (I have been a stamp collector in the past) but only I would give a hoot. Great card. Yadi's went for north of $50
ReplyDeleteI think I paid around $7 or $8 for this one. I guess just getting a Venezuelan stamp was enough for Topps didn't want to full with corresponding birth years.
DeleteWow on the Yadi price. He really demands premium dollars for his cards. McCutchen is really the only Pirate to be really expensive like that.
I like cards like this with different gimmicks. I spent some time in my youth collecting stamps and coins, so baseball cards that also include pieces from other niches are appealing to me. I also like some of the non-baseball relics that Topps includes in Allen & Ginter's, although those can be hit or miss depending on the subject.
ReplyDeleteMy only real gripe with this card is that the stamp isn't centered better in the little window. Poor presentation, in my opinion.
I agree about the centering. It just floats around in there with no purpose. Like I was telling Fuji above, I wouldn't spend much money on these type of cards. Each time I see an odd relic like this I also justify passing on it because I would much rather buy an auto or patch.
