Now this is a beautiful card. A 1957 Topps rookie of WVU great Hot Rod Hundley. Mark had warned me that the envelope only contained one card, but that he was sure I wouldn't mind. Boy was he right!
Hundley is a legend at WVU having scored over 2000 points in only three years and is the only Mountianeer ever drafted #1 overall. Only Hundley and Jerry West have their numbers by WVU. Injuries derailed his professional career, but he stayed in the game and became the voice of the Utah Jazz. He would often show up in Morgantown for events and even hit a hook shot at halftime at the game his jersey was retired. Sadly he passed away in March, but he leaves quite the legacy with the University.
Thanks so much for the great card Mark. I'll be sure to find some stuff to hit you back with very soon!
Beautiful indeed-
ReplyDeleteThanks Brady! The last two posts have really boosted by vintage WV collection.
Deletesweet! congrats!
ReplyDeleteI always dreamed of a certified Hot Rod and Jerry West card but sadly it will never exist.
DeleteSuper cool.
ReplyDeleteThank you sir!
DeleteAwesome card.
ReplyDeleteVintage basketball does have a cool look.
DeleteI had that card in my collection for over 40 years. I picked it up at a church flea market my mother used to help run. I grabbed it with a few other 57''s. It's always just kind of been in the collection. I'm glad it's found a good home.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate you thinking of me. He and Jerry West are the cream of the crop for WVU basketball.
DeleteBeautiful card. Love those lamb chops!
ReplyDeleteI think those were the doing of the first owner....
DeleteHot Rod! Minneapolis Laker!
ReplyDeleteI think he only got to play with Jerry West one year when the team moved to LA.
