It's Ok to Celebrate

The Pirates clinched their third consecutive playoff appearance last night when they defeated the Rockies. While the Pirates have an outside chance to still win the division, in all likelihood they are on a collision course to face the Cubs. Cue asshole fans and pundits....

The last couple of days their has been a lot of press on whether the Pirates should/how to celebrate clinching. So many people have been saying that they should "act like they've been there before", or keep it low key. What a bunch of shit.

Making the playoffs is hard. It would be one thing to keep it low key if you were likely to win the division. Since the division is unlikely for the Pirates I say celebrate like madmen. The same people who say keep celebrations low key are probably the same people who get bent out of shape when a guy stares down a homerun.

It should be a rule that you have to do a bat flip.  I would pretend the bat was a telescope after I launched one to get a good gauge of the distance.

Drink the champagne boys. You earned it! Who knows, you may have twenty straight years of losing in front of you.....

Thanks for reading.

  1. Act like you've been to the playoffs before? Who the hell is saying that? Must be Satan's spawn...er, Cardinals fans or Yankees fans or just jealous Reds fans or something.

Seriously -- when has a team NOT celebrated getting to the playoffs?

    1. I don't care if the Pirates had won 5 championships in a row. Champagne for everyone. It does sound like a Cardinals fans though. They are the best fans in baseball......

  2. I could see someone doing that (bat telescope) In a game LMFAO!I soooo want A-Rod to do that on his next homer ,he'd be kicked out of the country LOL!

    1. Arod missed his chance to become a complete heel this year. He should have acted like he was shooting up steroids every time he was rounding the bases. He should be come back player of the year, but baseball will have nothing to do with that.

  3. Considering how awful the Pirates were, they can do all the celebrating they want. I'm sure Pirates fans don't mind and the opinions of non-Buccos fans shouldn't really matter.

Although this makes me wonder whether or not this is just a bunch of white people bitching about a team that's actually diverse and has more than one obligatory/token black player.

    1. Most Pirate fans are eating this up. We sucked for so long that for the most part people don't seem to be taking it for granted. It would be nice to start winning some series. This is the deepest team, but anything can happen in a 1 game playoff and Jake Arrieta is really good.

  5. Congrats on making the post-season for the third year in a row!

I heard the opposite, that the Pirates' celebration was muted compared to previous years, but I have to admit I've been paying more attention to the Twins' dwindling playoff hopes.

    1. P.S. the Twins have a dance party in the clubhouse after every win, so they certainly would not begrudge a little celebration....

    2. The celebration was much calmer this time. I think mainly due to the fact that we still have 3 games with the Cards. Also, they are probably tired of playing in the wildcard game. I'm guessing if we win that game and will be back to celebrating hardcore!

    3. We have a dance party before every game!

  6. I'm so out of it, I was shocked to look at the standings the other day and see the Pirates with 90+ wins. Congrats!

    1. The three teams in the Central had the three best records. Cubs and Royals were alternating for a while so I'm not sure if that is still true.

  7. Congratulations! I pretended to flip my bat in my office in honor of your Pirates. I'll be pulling for them and the Cubs in the NL.

    1. It looks like you might be torn because the Pirates will most likely be playing the Cubs. We have an outside chance to win the division, but we will have to sweep the Cards.

    2. Yeah. Not a fan of the current playoff setup, because of this. Never really notice the flaw until this season. I wonder how often the three best records come from one division.

    3. I think the AL East did it a couple times with the Yanks, Red Sox and Rays, but I'm not positive. It sucks that it is happening to the Pirates, but it doesn't happen enough to change it. One thing that might help is making the wildcard game a 3 game series.

    4. I agree... too rare to mess with. Just sucks knowing that if the season ended today, it'd be guaranteed that the 4th or 5th best team would make it to the NLCS and two of the top 3 teams would be knocked out. Best of luck on the sweep.

On a more positive note... you gotta love the scheduling. LA vs. SF and STL vs PIT... both series have playoff implications. It's a shame the AL West contenders aren't facing each other. That would have been really cool.

    5. At least in this format the Pirates still get in the playoffs. Pre wildcard days would have left the Buccos and Cubs home. We just needed to take care of business more in our own division.
