2014 Topps Archives Deckle Mini Auto /25

Andy Van Slyke put up some monster years for the Pirates in the late 80's early 90's.  Some of my earliest memories at Three Rivers Stadium were of AVS manning centerfield for the Buccos. I'm always excited when I'm able to add an auto, especially a hard to find variation.  Normally I would open a box of Archives, but the prices sky rocketed this year with the popularity of the Major League autos. Someone in the blog world pulled the Charlie Sheen.  Was that your Raz?

Hope everyone enjoys the World Series! I really don't have a rooting interest so I'm just hoping for a good series.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I wasn't alive when Andy Van Slyke was a major leaguer but the people that were must've felt old when his son Scott Van Slyke faced off against Bruce Bochy's son Brett Bochy with Tom Gordon's son Dee Gordon on base.

    1. I was in elementary school when he was playing but is still weird to see their sons playing today. Scott is built a lot bigger than Andy.

    1. I need to get the Dave Parker from this years Archives. Archives always produces a lot of Pirates so I enjoy the set too.

  3. Yes, I pulled a Charlie Sheen autograph from this year's Archives. For some reason my local shop kept prices at about retail while the online folks were selling boxes for $30-40 over. I took advantage of the good fortune and bought three of them. I don't remember exactly what else I pulled, except I did get Bipped with a Fan Favorite autograph. Archives has plenty of flaws (like reusing the same designs when there are so many others to choose from), but it's one of my favorite products each year.

    1. What a great pull! Probably one of the best cards you could pull in 2014 that isn't some kind of crazy 1/1. That is cool your local card shop kept prices low. Was it the good nature of the owner, or just oblivious to the market?

    2. I don't know the exact reason. He must have some sort of feel for the market, as he has been in business for over 20 years while many others have come and gone. He does tend to stick pretty close to Beckett prices on singles, so I don't know if I've ever actually purchased a loose card from him. And his wax prices tend to track 30-100% over what the online outfits charge, so I am not sure why that trend was reversed for this one individual product.

    3. Maybe he was just used to Archives being cheaper. Either way it was a great score for you. You sold it right?

I wish I had a LCS. My town is 50% college students so it is hard for a shop to survive here. We have had several come and go over the years.
