The Joy of Small Sample Sizes

I'm excited that the Pirates have gotten off to a good start.  Do I think they are this good...no, but they can't take these wins away.  The narrative from the media after the Cutch and Cole trade was this team was looking like they were going into rebuilding mode.  The front office liked a more fan friendly term of retooling. Before the season I predicting to be .500ish and called them boringly average. Surprisingly they've been fun to watch.

For me the most exciting part of the season has been watching a healthy Jameson Taillon pitch. It is not a surprise that he is pitching well, the pedigree is there. He just hasn't been able to stay on the field. His young career has been cursed with injuries.  Arm injuries, line drives to the head and most recently his treatment for testicular cancer.  As a fan you just want to cheer for him a little more knowing his background.

2017 Topps Five Star Jameson Taillon Patch Auto /25

Taillon cards are dirt cheap right now so I can chase cards like this without breaking the bank. I'm guessing at some point his hot start will be noticed and he will start gaining some momentum. While I hope he continues his strong start, it was nice to add so many great cards for pennies on the $.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Looks nice! Good idea getting in on some of his better stuff right now, I'm sure it's heading back up.

    1. I hope so...The Pirates really need him to be the guy all year. We have decent pitching depth, but a lot of those guys don't seem to have the upside that Taillon has.

  2. Awesome card. I've always liked Taillon more than Cole so it's nice to see him being successful.

    1. It is nice to see Taillon getting k's this year. In the past that has been the one thing keeping him from truly being a front line guy.

  3. That's a nice patch and a great looking auto. The Pirates are definitely a surprise so far, but this Cubs fan will remember the Reds started out hot last year, too.

    1. Oh yeah...Right now we are short sample size heroes. The good thing is that some of the biggest issues from last year were injuries and Marte's PED suspension. Having Marte, Polanco and Cervelli on the field at the same time is a huge boost. The big wildcards are the starters. Not a ton of experience outside of Nova.

    1. His base autos are still so cheap. Don't get many opportunities to get cards from sets like Five Star
