Digging Deep

I think every team has that player that has been around for a long time, but for whatever reason lacks a decent amount of cardboard. For the Pirates this would be starting shortstop Jordy Mercer. He is well into his fifth season as a Pirate and other than some flagship cards here and there his card catalog is lacking.

2013 Topps Update Jordy Mercer Blue Sapphire /25

When I saw this parallel pop up on eBay I knew I wanted to grab it.  I also knew it would likely be one of those deals where I pay more in shipping than the actual card. I hate doing that, but the allure of adding a card of Mercer I didn't have was too much.  So here we are!

Overall it is a pretty nice looking card. In hand the background doesn't look as green as it does in the scan.  Looks like he is playing in overgrown grass in that picture.

Does your team have a guy that has been around for a long time, but lacks cards? Jordy's reason is that he wasn't a huge prospect. Those guys tend to not get the Bowman love.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Not currently, but I always felt that way about Luis Sojo.

    1. The weird thing is that Mercer has been the starter for several years now, including playoff teams.

  2. Francisco Cervelli was that guy for a long time, mainly because he exceeded expectations by becoming a serviceable big leaguer at all. Also the checklists were bloated with Yankees as is so he was left out a lot.

    1. I would love a Francisco relic or auto in a Buccos uni.

    2. I'm not surprised he doesn't have a lot of relics/autos. He stopped signing around the time Upper Deck baseball disintegrated (exclusive contract maybe?) and the last time he had a relic was in 2011.

    3. Cervelli would be awesome. I have a few low numbered cards, but that is about it. Need to get him signing again.

  3. The A's don't keep players for five seasons... so not really. But when he was with the team, I always wanted to see more Sogard cardboard.

    1. Well you have plenty Eric Chavez cards to chase. That guy was in every set for about 3 years straight.

  4. It seems like topps was late to recognize Justin turner as a dodger, but I could be wrong about that. I was most recently confused when aj ellis, the dodger starting catcher the previous few seasons, wasn't in flagship series 1 or 2 in 2016 but was instead included in update, by which time he was playing for the Phillies. Tools still had him as a dodger, of course.

    1. AJ Ellis is a good one. Always kind of weird when a big market player gets a cardboard snub. He probably at least made some cameos on a Kershaw card or two....
