One area in which the 9.99 price seems to hold up well is high end rookie debuts. Knowing this I went ahead and took the plunge for the Jameson Taillon. To be honest it still felt like I was overpaying.
Looking on eBay as of Tuesday afternoon it looks like I could have bought the card for a couple bucks less. Maybe I should just wait for all of them.......
I'm guessing since the word is out on Topps Now that the market is getting flooded. The first couple of weeks the print runs were under 500, but now the majority of cards are well above that mark.
For the foreseeable future my Topps Now purchases will be later....
When will then be now? Soon.
ReplyDeleteWhile that's a nice looking card, I still can't justify dropping $9.99 on a single card from Topps, especially since there are few, if any, Reds cards.
I'm sure you can find the Reds NOW cards cheaper on eBay.
DeleteUsually it seems like it works out to wait, but I passed on the Evan Gattis card and it wound up being the NOW card with the lowest print run to date. Once the print run was announced the prices went up to $20+ and haven't come down.
ReplyDeleteThe first card in the set was Francisco Liriano. That is the only one I regret not buying. It sells for ~$45-55 now. At the time my mindset was "I could never buy a Liriano card for $10 as that is about the going rate for a printing plate.
DeleteBad timing too, Taillon just went on the DL (again).
ReplyDeleteI think this was a creative way to limit his innings without having to send him back down.
DeleteThere are 16 Dodgers Topps Now cards. I'm not buying a single one until the hype dries up. Topps is trying to capitalize on Seager, Urias, Trayce Thompson, etc. I'm not playing that game.
ReplyDeleteThe pricing seems a little out of whack for what you get. I'm hoping that Topps will tinker with the price structure some next year or improve on the card design.
DeleteCheck out same day eBay sellers like lmttoday and editorgaw.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip!
DeleteSo far, I've bought every single Brewers Topps Now card directly from Topps.
ReplyDeleteEvery single one.
As in, the one. :-)
Ha. At least you are saving money!
DeleteI've avoided this trend for NOW... and since there's not much to celebrate as an A's or Padres fan... my two favorite teams have made my decision that much easier.
ReplyDeleteYou could probably pick up A's and Padres for half price on eBay.
